Thanks Newt.
I did look at the float height on the new carb. It's an aftermarket one from eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-C100-CA100-C102-C50-CUB-NEW-Carburetor-C70-C65-/360282420726?hash=item53e28175f6:m:m3hv-trpmya_7_ypILvqKBQ&vxp=mtr and appeared to have two available positions. Not like a normal float adjustment, has a circlip and spring on the needle.
I'll try the other position tomorrow and report back with the results.
