A Timing mystery

I acquired a C90Z2 engine awhile back and recently set up the timing ie:... the rotar "F" firing mark/line aligned to the stator plate timing mark, and the points set to open correctly and the "O" mark on the timing chain sprocket lining up with the timing mark on the cam casing, however the engine would not fire up,

so I then turned the rotar and aligned one of the next two lines/marks that are inscribed on it to the stator plate timing mark and bingo the engine runs perfect.

So basically the engine is now running fine but it shouldn't be, as the timing is set wrong according to the rotar marks. o.O
I might add that I've set the timing on these engine many times before never encountered this one.

what could cause this? any ideas much appreciated
