Apparently the National health funds 300 operations per year to remove cocktail sticks from people 7plus die before they are discovered and 17 die after the operation.
It seems if you drink a very cold drink (lager) or a very hot drink (coffee) or a spicy meal (Vindaloo or Phal) it numbs the nerves in your throat and if you then pick up a canape or pig in a blanket etc you will not know you have swallowed the stick.
Less than 12% of those having an operation have any idea of how it happened and many more swallow them and they go right through without pain.
They do not show up on X ray or CT scans.
Mine only showed after 9 months of hell as I lost all control of my core muscles due to it deciding to go through the nerve. It had at last calcified enough to show up on a very special CT scan.My thanks to my surgeon for believing something was wrong.
I thought last year I had stomach cancer and had every test imaginable but they found nothing deciding it was all in my head and putting me on Vallium etc.
I was driven mad with the pain no one would believe me and in all honesty got very near to pulling the plastic bag down over my head.
