Well done Griz, I think you must be right. From what I can gather it was owned by 3 people before me and the legend that was passed down through the mists of time were that it had suddenly stopped running when its number was 3,135. The owner instead of fixing it and not knowing much about bikes sold it to someone else who did not know much about bikes and with the passage of time this owner sold it to a third man who was a wise man who though wise in many things was not so wise about bikes and the bike was now in bits and distributed in many boxes and so it came to pass that in modern times I did come across this bike in bits and I was given the message that surely the bike can not run without a new cylinder and piston.

I would say that your story about oil and overheating fit the 'facts' as I know them.

Today I was just getting round to the exhaust when rain stopped play so I guess that I would have found out then why the clutch cover needed to be replaced.
