How fast does it go?
How many times have you been asked this question? But it’s an impossible question to answer, there are just too many variables: hills, wind direction, gearing, clothing, rider posture, atmospheric conditions and even distance, after all 60mph if it’s only for 5 miles doesn’t really cut the mustard. What we need is an industry standard for our little bikes, a little like land speed records……………..only slower. Most of our bikes are used for Bimbles and quite long distance runs and therefore I believe speed should be measured over a longish distance to take account of overheating and fuel issues which could affect long distance travelling. With this in mind, here are my thoughts so far:
Fixed test course, central to the uk for accessibility reasons.
Motorway to avoid having to slow for traffic.
Two way run to take account of hills and wind direction.
Speed to be taken as an overall average using a sat nav and to include all stops and turning round.
A minimum of 100 miles total to take account of fueling, overheating and general reliability issues.
Start point/finish point, to be a service station to allow everyone to start with a full tank.
Halfway turn round point, to be a roundabout without traffic lights with a service station to allow for re-fueling if required.
Sat nav readings at start and finish to be witnessed and photographed by an independent observer, so best to do it in pairs (just remember to turn your satnav off if you get back first)

I think this definition of how fast a bike is would actually be useful to identify what works and what doesn’t and help those who want to improve performance without sacrificing reliability.

If there are those who would enjoy the competitive side of such a trial (can’t imagine that XD ), then the manual clutch beasts might need to be placed in class of their own due to the almost unlimited choice and availability of these large capacity, professionally tuned high performance pit bike engines, and the Cub nickname of “Crunchie” refers to Honda’s semi auto clutched step-thru’s. Obviously this would have nothing to do with Scruff being Semi Auto lol ;)

What do people think and who would be interested in having a go?
