Wigan was for many years the only large town I knew where you could not buy a carabiner. You could in Bolton, Preston, Warrington, Lancaster, Blackburn... but not Wigan. Wiganers have never had a use for them. Sitting at a bar in Wigan last winter I mentioned taking my crampons with me that weekend. Nobody at the bar had the faintest idea what crampons were. I tried to describe them but they really didn't have a clue. Took a lad up Ingleborough a couple of summers ago and he was terrified. He thought that the sound of grasshoppers was the hissing of snakes. He had never been out of town before.
