If the rack goes on the inside of the suspension unit you will certainly best remove the unit complete. Take off the top and bottom nuts and it should pull off quite easily. I doubt if there will be enough free play to just pull the top end clear as you would effectively be forcing the bottom end at an angle. It may be possible to do one side at a time. If not (ie if the rack won't go on the opposite side), put the bike on its centre stand, then put a brick or two under the rear wheel so that it doesn't drop when you remove the units. You can then easily remove both units at once which makes fitting the rack a doddle.
On NO account omit the large washers which go on the ends of the suspension studs under the nuts.
