Andre Citroen had a Dutch father and a Polish mother, after he graduated as an engineer he visited his relatives in Poland. There he saw the double gears made from wood being used in mills, on his return to France he applied and was granted a patent to manufacture them in metal. That's how he started and soon was supplying his gears widely. They were even fitted to the Titanic's steering gear
