Ok not exactly but at times it certainly felt like it. The pre new year Lancs runout went ahead as planned. It lashed it down all day, all 236 miles of it . We met up at Settle again as it's a good central loation for all of us and it's a nice place. So which fools turned up. Well me of course, Russ, Vic, Boo, JJ, Amie and Amies mum , she obviously doesn't trust us lot for some reason .
Yes it was pissing down AGAIN, so the plan was to get up to The Lake District and head back home. Sounds simple and easy, doesn't it?
We trundled up the A65 towards J36 on the m6. Once again there were floods everywhere but I was quite enjoying the ride as I had my thermals on and two layers of waterproof clothing and waterproof gloves with waterproof overmits on . So to all intents and purposes I was warm and dry . The others had wrapped up well too.
Just before we hit the A65/J36 interchange we stopped to regroup. Amies mum had taken the wise decision to turn around and go home..sensible person. The A65 becomes the A590 to Newby Bridge and we followed this dual carriageway for about eight miles or so then took a right turn and onto the A5074. I love this road, it's sort of a short cut to Bowness on Winderemere. It jinks back and forth and up and down, perfect Cub roads. It's classified as an A road but think of it as a tight nadgery B road. We dodge around the floods on the lanes again and we are soon In Bowness by the ferry/pleasure cruise boats.

Quick stop at Bowness

We have a quick stop to catch our breaths and we are off again ( don't worry it's still raining ) Into the streets of Bowness and take a left along the A592 to the bottom end of Windermere town. Left along the shore of Lake Winderemere on the A591 to Ambleside. It's really busy loads of traffic and people, however, all day I only see two other bikes. See, see we are stupid.
On the road out of Ambleside, the road where the little house it built on the bridge, we take a right at the mini rounabout to tackle the 'Struggle' to get to our destination of the Kirkstone pass and the pub at the top of it. It is deceptively steep in parts, first gear throttle pinned type steep. It's still raining and there's snow on top. We fall into the pub leaking water all over the floor. Drinks ordered, food ordered, time to stip off . I dunno about the others, but miraculously I'm still dry under all my clobber . We stop about an hour in the pub. It would have been half an hour but for some reason they did not want to give Vic the chips he'd ordered. Said he'd already eaten them, apparently. Now I know Vics put some weight on over Christmas, but how rude of them. He got them in the end . Thinking back we should never have gone to the pub, because instead of turing for home, JJ convinced us to carry on and ride over Hardknott and Wrynose passes. Oh go on then

Just about ready for the off again, leaving a nice warm pub behind

. For some reason I was elected to lead, so I went and got us lost and we went on a 20ml detour via Grassmere, which was quite pleasant apart from the pouring rain...still. JJ and Boo got us back on track and the two passes were again demolished by the Cubbists. One particular section of very narrow road had an inocuous puddle right in the middle, you had to ride through it as the road is only about six feet wide. In fact that was almost the depth of the puddle, Im convinced the wash came over everyones knees .

Oh bugger, it's nearly dark

All we had to do now was tackle Birker Fell again in the dark with Cub headlights . Oh it's still monsooning and I'm leasding again. I think they let me lead so when I went off the edge of a rocky outcrop they wouldn't . Most of the time it was ok but ocassionally you would just 'lose' the road completely and I'd be fighting to pull the brakes on till I could get my bearings again. It was even worse if a car came the other way as you were temporarilly blinded. If this sounds like a crap ride out?? it wasn't, it was *&^&*& brilliant . We get to the A595 via Ulpha and Woods End. By gum were all still in one piece. Did I mention the rain? Oh cause it still was and by now my hands are wet and my boots have just stopped being waterproof. Like everyone elses kit . We jog along the A595 towards Newby Bridge collecting some fuel on the way. Time to head home . JJ and Boo shoot off then Vic makes a bid for the warmth of home in Leeds and me Russ and Amie pin it down the dark, busy and dare I say it wet M6 to home. I left the house at exactly 9.00 am and got back in dead on 7pm at night. Soaked and cold . Ace day out again. I didn't take many photos due to the weather, sorry.
