So role forward a couple of years, a heart attack and a growing lack of confidence during cornering; I feel the urge to return to the Plop Enduro. The opportunity to do so presents itself in the form of a £75 Cub90 field bike on Fleabay. Mistakenly assuming I can’t go wrong for £75, the deal is made I return home with my prize. A little Sherlock Holmes investigation I discover the bike was one of 40 insurance write-offs sold by Norwich Union to a bike shop called A W Sykes in Pontefract, who stripped the bikes down to the basics and sold them to the local youths as field bikes. Norwich Union insisted the bikes could not be returned to the road, the VIN number erased and that the buyers identity be stamped on both the engine and frame, so my Cub90 is stamped Sykes10. It’s an interesting fact that back in 2004, following complaints about 40 youths had to be stopped from riding their motorbikes on waste land in Pontefract. I understand the bike then passed from hand to hand, until being used as transport around a farm and eventually passed to the gentleman’s grandson where it then lay rotting for 2 years, until I bought it. So here is “Sykes 10”:
