Chains rarely if ever wear evenly resulting in areas which are tight, called tight spots, while areas with more wear are slacker. When checking chains for tension prior to adjustment always spin the back wheel by hand and feel the chain for the tightest spot and adjust from that point. If your chain was adjusted for correct tension using the slackest point, when you ride off the chain will become over tight when the tight spot is reached resulting in increased tension at that point. Mechanical stresses would then become increased as this point is reached and may have been a factor in your chain breaking.
