Well been dashing about this afternoon, and passing near Fowler's I called in on the off chance to see if the chain had arrived - it had; so it's done and dusted - fitted and oiled. But when I came to fit the damaged sprocket cover I discovered yet more damage. The bolt-holding at the bottom had also sheared off in all the carnage - so only one bolt holding the sprocket cover in place for the moment. Asked Fowler's out of curiosity for a price on a generator cover and the sprocket cover and was quoted £80 for the two.

I'm not road testing it until the chaincases arrive - with a bit of luck that could be Friday. But to all intents and purposes it's ready to go :)

Also picked up the old chain from the roadside - the chain had snapped about 4 or 5 links away from the split link. One side only of a side plate had broken away at the furthest end holding the pin. The opposite side-plate was still firmly gripping the pin.

- One broken side plate resulted in all the subsequent damage.

Reading the notes that came with the new chain it gave a warning about defective chains smashing crankcases, wheels, swing arms etc., And there's me thinking the damaged covers were an unfortunate one-off.

Thanks to all of you for the hints, tips and views - I'll be re-reading them again.
