We'll i got bored so i did some more testing
inspected and cleaned terminals - no change
shorted relay - no change
spare battery straight to motor - no change
So i took the motor off and cracked it open.....
just a little carbon dust.
then i noticed that the brushes were uneven then lo an behold the root of my problems.....
one tiny bloody spring had disintegrated. (left spring good one)
so a little bodgery with an old carb spring, followed by an hour of trying to work out how to keep the bushes apart while I reinserted the stator, only to realise that the end cap comes off the motor (doh!)
and now she's fine.
I'll order up some new brushes and springs, should be an easy job the second time around
