They are often pretty clueless these days. I got a call from a friend a couple of years back, her car (Renault 5) had broken down, AA man had been but couldn't get it going or find the fault.
When I got there I asked what he'd done and apparently he'd been spraying easy-start down the carb while she turned it over! o.O o.O (never do this on a petrol car - if it backfires you'll go up in flames!)

First thing I thought I'd do was check for a spark at a plug lead.. I really expected see one - It'd surely have been the first thing the AA man checked, or why else would he have been spraying easy start...

Hmm.. No spark.. OK, take the distributor cap off and have a look.. I didn't get that far!
The distributor was loose and not earthing.. Tightened the pinch bolt and the car started in a second.

So it took five minutes of simple diagnosis, but the AA man had been half an hour there and given up (and potentially nearly set himself on fire!)

The 'check for a spark before looking at fuel or air' rule is as relevant on a new car as it has been for 100 years, so unfamiliarity with '80s cars couldn't be his excuse.

I wonder where they find them!
